Common Calgary AC Problems and Solutions

June 13, 2016

Last year we published a few of the most common air conditioning problems Calgary faces, but today we are here to tell you about some typical air conditioning problems that you can help troubleshoot.

The A/C is on but not putting out cool air.

If your air conditioner is running but not really cooling, you might need to have your refrigerant levels inspected. Refrigerant is needed to make sure the air being released from the AC is truly cool and keeps you comfortable. Low refrigerant is frequently an indicator of a leak or that the system wasn’t charged properly.

One way to confirm if you are low on refrigerant is to go out to your air conditioning system and find the two copper pipes. If the larger of the two is “sweating” or giving off condensation, put your hand on the pipe and feel if it’s cold. If it is, you are probably good to go and don’t require additional refrigerant.

If you’re unsure or the pipe is not giving off condensation and is not cold when you feel it, call Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning and we’ll come out and examine your refrigerant levels and learn why your system is not blowing cool air. Remember, only an EPA Certified technician should work on refrigerant for central air conditioning systems, due to the risks of handling this potentially dangerous chemical.

You air condenser fan isn’t turning.

There are many reasons your condenser fan might not be turning. One could be that it just burned out and you require a replacement. Humidity generally causes more condensation so another issue could be that the water is not draining properly or that the drain is obstructed. If you can confirm these things, you may be able to locate the issue; but, if not, give Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning a call and we can inspect what has stopped your condenser fan from circulating and walk you through your options to get your air conditioner problem corrected.

Your A/C is not providing ample air cooling.

The first step is to try dropping the temperature on your thermostat. It seems ridiculous but sometimes we tend to ignore the obvious. If that doesn’t get your AC cooling, check and replace the air filter. If the air filter is clogged, it could cause major cooling problems. Another issue that could cause your lack of cooling is an air conditioner that is not sized properly, and unfortunately this is a frequent issue when homes are constructed. Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning is happy to come out and perform an analysis to confirm whether or not the size of your AC is causing your issues.

A/C system shuts on and off constantly

If your A/C system is short cycling, or turning on or off constantly, it could mean one of a few things. One possibility is that your condenser or evaporator is obstructed or dirty and in need of cleaning. Once the system is cleaned and all blockages moved away, you may be back to a regular running AC. Remember that humidity also plays a role so if the home cools to the desired temperatures, but then the humidity causes your home to heat up quickly, this would contribute to an on-again, off-again air conditioner because it’s having to work harder to keep your family cool and comfortable.

No matter your problem, whatever usual or unusual A/C problem you run into, Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning is here for you around the clock. We are available to you so we can get your AC system cooling and get your family comfortable quickly.
