How a Pressure Switch Works

This part plays a critical role as your furnace prepares to warm your house.

Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:

  • Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This pushes out combustion gases from the heat exchanger and brings in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
  • When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
  • Your furnace ignites and supplies heat.

What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails

When your pressure switch isn’t working the way it should, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking a couple times before the furnace shuts down completely. When a part isn’t working right, your furnace will turn off as a safety precaution.

Your furnace will show you something is wrong with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to present error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.

You may see fast flashes or an alternating slow flash as it passes on a fault code.
